The former English country residence of late film director Stanley Kubrick has been put up on the market with a guide price of GBP6.95 million ($11.8 million), according to a May 27 release.
Kubrick previously bought the property, named Abbots Mead, in 1965. It served as his family residence for 14 years, according to marketing agent Savills. Located near Elstree Studios, the estate was also used as Kubrick’s cinematic workspace, where he worked on several of his most celebrated films, including 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon and The Shining.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to own a true piece of filmmaking history that helped shape some of the most iconic films in cinema,” says Steven Spencer, head of office at Savills Rickmansworth.
Abbots Mead is located on Barnet Lane in Elstree, a village in Hertfordshire, about 24km northwest of central London. The property sits on 2.4 acres of land and spans over 7,700 sq ft across three floors. The property, which has been extended and modified over the years, comprises nine bedrooms, with the principal bedroom suite featuring a large fireplace, bay window overlooking the garden, dressing room with a range of built-in wardrobes and a spacious bathroom.

The ground floor houses a main drawing room with an open fireplace and carved marble surround, wooden floors and double doors that open to a conservatory and study. Other features include a dining room with a bay window and French doors that lead to a garden terrace, and a family room with a large carved fireplace. A large farmhouse-style kitchen with pine floor units, open shelving and built-in appliances completes the ground floor.
According to Savills, the house has also retained some of its period features, including ornate cornices, high skirtings, original doors and fireplaces. Other features include a rear garden, a wisteria-covered pergola, a heated swimming pool, a pool house with sauna and two greenhouses.

Located alongside a double garage, the estate includes a separate single garage with a two-bedroom apartment on its first floor. The property also features Abbots Mead Lodge, a 3,200 sq ft detached four-bedroom house with its own private garden.
“Quite apart from its history, Abbots Mead is a handsome period house in its own right, enjoying a secluded position in a highly regarded road, adjoining open countryside and mature woodland,” adds Spencer.

The property boasts close proximity to Elstree and Borehamwood station, which offers regular train services to London King’s Cross.
The property is expected to appeal to ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) individuals in Asia due to its emotional and investment value, says Ruben Koh, senior director and head of international residential sales at Savills Singapore. “Stanley Kubrick’s enduring global appeal adds an exceptional layer of cultural significance, making this not just a luxury home but marking it as a highly distinctive asset belonging to a legend.”
